We are deeply concerned by the decision to make the appointment of Laura Johnson to a senior housing position at The Barnet Group permanent.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry made serious findings about decisions taken during her time as Director of Housing at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Grenfell United, representing bereaved families, survivors and former residents, has publicly called for this appointment to be reconsidered. Nine years after the Grenfell Tower fire, bereaved families, survivors and residents are still waiting for justice and accountability. Their voices must be heard and treated with respect.

We are also deeply concerned about the message this appointment sends to tenants and residents in Barnet. People living in council and social housing have the right to expect the highest standards of safety, accountability and confidence in those responsible for their homes.

Grenfell raised fundamental questions about housing safety, accountability, the treatment of tenants and whether residents are listened to. Those questions matter to all of us. We believe The Barnet Group and Barnet Council should listen to the concerns being raised by Grenfell residents and families, Barnet tenants, trade unions, community organisations and the wider public, and reconsider this appointment.

We stand in solidarity with the bereaved, survivors and residents of Grenfell, and with tenants and residents in Barnet who are demanding answers and accountability.
